Partita di Chinlone, Mingun

Date and time of the recording: 4th September 2019, 1 pm

Coming back from the visit to Mingun Pagoda, we casually bump into a match of chinlone, under a big awning on the street side. Chinlone is considered the Burmese national sport and has a very long history, no less than 1,500 years. It’s a fusion of soccer, martial arts and dance: each team has six players, that, inside a sort of “ring”, have to pass each other a wicker ball on the fly, using only their feet; the goal of the fame is to realize as many passage as possible without letting the ball fall. In this sport, music has a very important role: the matches are accompanied by a live music band that plays traditional Burmese music, that gives the rhythm of the match and emphasizes the gestures of the players, often urging their movements.
