Pahto Dawgy, Mingun

Date and time of the recording: 4th September 2019, 12.10 pm

Mingun pagoda (Pahto Dawgyi) is an incomplete stupa in Sagaing region, 10 km north of Mandalay. The pagoda was commissioned by the king Bodawpaya in 1790 and interrupted for many reasons, among which, it’s said, a great dissatisfaction of the population, claiming that its completion would have caused the destruction of the Country. In 1819, year of the death of Bodawpaya (a very superstitious man, who had stopped, in any case, the building of the pagoda), the project was definitively abandoned. The eccentrical look of this monument is further emphasised by the huge cracks on the facade, caused by the 1839 earthquake.

The atmosphere of this strange monument is mixed with the reality of the numerous peddlers that sell bracelets and other souvenirs, one of which tries to attract customers with loud music.
